Un prolongement ô combien heureux d’une pièce maîtresse du XXe siècle.
«Œuvre foisonnante, extravagante, «Escalator Over the Hill» (EOTH) est paru en 1972 sous la forme d’un triple LP de plus de deux heures de musique, où se mêlent théâtre musical, poésie déclamée, country, jazz, pop-rock, musiques du monde, manipulations électroniques... Cet éclec- tisme dans les sources d’inspiration de Carla Bley, auxquelles on pourrait ajouter les fanfares de cuivres, les couleurs orchestrales élaborées, les solos extatiques qu’elle a connu dans le free, les sons inouïs de l’électro- acoustique, font d’EOTH une œuvre inclassable, à l’image de son auteur(...) Ici l’attention des arrangeurs, puis du collectif face aux partitions proposées, s’est notamment portée sur la création d’un son d’orchestre, d’une pâte sonore qui leur soit propre, ce en quoi ils ont parfaitement réussi : leur appropriation s’avère riche, multiple, puissante, en des choix musi- caux toujours judicieux ; et surtout, le nécessaire enthousiasme et la non moins essentielle générosité des musiciens nous offrent un prolongement ô combien heureux d’une pièce maîtresse du XXe siècle qui pourtant en compte de nombreuses. « Over the Hills » donne ainsi à entendre l’œuvre originale autant qu’elle propose une Œuvre Autre !» Ludovic FLORIN
A successful continuation of a 20th century's masterpiece:
"A prolific, extravagant work," Escalator Over the Hill "(EOTH) was released in 1972 as a triple LP of more than two hours of music, which combines musical theater, declaimed poetry, country, jazz, pop- rock, world music, electronic manipulations ... This eclecticism in Carla Bley's sources of inspiration, to which could be added the brass fanfares, the elaborate orchestral colors, the ecstatic solos she experienced in the free world the unheard sounds of electro-acoustics make EOTH an unclassifiable work, just like its author ... Here the attention of the arrangers, then of the collective in front of the proposed partitions, was particularly focused on the creation of a personal's orchestra sound, what they perfectly succeeded: their appropriation proves always to be rich, multiple, powerful, in judicious musical choices and above all, the necessary enthusiasm, and the no less essential generosity, of the musicians offer us an successfull continuation of this masterpiece of the twentieth century.
