Après un libre hommage aux compositeurs de musiques de films (Bandes Originales), le trio formé par Vincent Courtois, Daniel Erdmann et Robin Fincker s’empare de l’oeuvre immense de Jack London et signe un album, enregistré sur les terres de l'écrivain, en Californie, qui dit la complexité et la beauté de l'oeuvre de l'auteur de Martin Eden.
“J’ai découvert Jack London assez tard, en novembre 2016 : d’abord, les Chroniques des mers du sud puis l’initiatique et incontournable "Martin Eden" se souvient Vincent Courtois. “L’oeuvre dense et souvent autobiographique de cet écrivain américain, si riche et si puissante, n’a alors cessé de me suivre, d’accompagner mon quotidien, mes voyages et donc la musique que je joue”.
L’idée a alors germé chez le violoncelliste de monter une tournée sur les traces de Jack London et d’enregistrer un album, inspiré de son oeuvre, dans le fief de l’écrivain, à Oakland, en Californie. Le trio, augmenté de l’ingénieur du son Gérard de Haro (La Buissonne), a donc traversé l’Atlantique et joué sa musique sur la côte est (Boston, New York) avant de rejoindre la baie de San Francisco où un enregistrement en public avait été organisé. La veille, rendez-vous avait été pris avec l’arrière-petite-fille de Jack London, Tarnell Abbott, dans l’antre de l’écrivain qui est devenu un parc historique, sur le versant est du mont Sonoma. Vincent Courtois, Daniel Erdmann et Robin Fincker ont même improvisé sur la tombe de l’auteur de Martin Eden, à quelques mètres des ruines de son ranch parti en fumée. Un moment capturé par le photographe Loïc Vincent et qui deviendra la pochette de Love of Live, nouvel album de ce trio inséparable depuis Mediums (2012) et qui est devenu l’une des formations les plus précieuses du jazz européen.
La plupart des compositions reprennent donc des titres de nouvelles et récits de London, que Courtois, Erdmann et Fincker ne cessent de découvrir depuis que ce projet a pris forme dans la tête du violoncelliste, qui improvise et écrit régulièrement autour de textes en prose et de poèmes (avec le comédien Pierre Baux et l’écrivain Frédéric Boyer notamment) mais n’avait jamais emmené son trio sur ce terrain si fertile. Ici, c’est la musique qui raconte et répond aux récits de London dont la véritable force, suggère Vincent Courtois, est “d’avec ses vies de rencontrer la nôtre, de devenir cet ami, cet ancêtre éloigné, ce frangin, ce camarade de qui chaque jour on attend de nouveaux récits.”
After an open tribute to film-music composers (Bandes Originales / 2017), the trio formed by Vincent Courtois, Daniel Erdmann and Robin Fincker takes hold of the immense work of Jack London and produce an album, recorded on the lands of the writer in California, portraying the complexity and beauty of the Martin Eden author's work.
"I discovered Jack London quite recently, in August 2016 : first, the South Sea Tales then the seminal indispensable Martin Eden" remembers Vincent Courtois. “The dense, semi-autobiographical work, so rich and so powerful, has been by my side ever since. In my daily life, a companion on my travels and an inspiration to my music.”
The idea soon came to the cellist to organise a tour of concerts in the footsteps of Jack London and record an album inspired by his work, in the writer's fief in Oakland, California. The trio which has since become one of the most valuable formations of European jazz since their first album « Mediums » in 2012 crossed the Atlantic accompanied by the sound engineer Gerard de Haro (La Buissonne) and first played a couple of shows on the east coast (Boston, New York) before reaching the bay of San Francisco where a recording with an audience had been organized. The day before the recording, an appointment was made with Jack London's great-grand daughter Tarnell Abbott, in the writer's farmhouse which has become an historic park on the eastern slope of Mount Sonoma. Vincent Courtois, Daniel Erdmann and Robin Fincker even improvised on the author's grave, a few meters from the ruins of his ranch which went up in flames.
This moment was captured by the photographer Loïc Vincent and was to become the Love of Life album's cover.
All the album's compositions are based on Jack London novels and short-stories, which Courtois, Erdmann and Fincker have been discovering ever since this project took shape in the head of the cellist. Courtois regularly improvises and writes around prose texts and poems (with the actor Pierre Baux and the writer Frédéric Boyer in particular) but had never taken his trio on this fertile ground.
Here, it is the music aims to respond to the stories of Jack London whose real force is, according to Vincent Courtois, "to reach into our lives with his own, to become the friend, this brother, comrade in whose company each day brings a new story”.
