Third release of Amarela Records : Fred Frith in a debut duo album with French cellist Vincent Segal, recorded live at at CEEAC in Strasbourg in May 2017 (a performance produced by Elisa Arciniegas) and re-mixed by Frith in February 2023.
This duo contrasts the irreverent and imaginative approach of Frith to playing the electric guitar and free improvisation at all, using effects, objects and a bow, with the more reserved, chamber-like approach of Segal.
Often, Segal suggests melodic, sometimes exotic and dramatic, rhythmic veins and Frith ornaments and spirals these veins into unpredictable, otherworldly veins. But the interplay throughout this set of eight concise and economic improvisations is always attentive and conversational and distills the uplifting spirit of such a playful, open and inclusive performance. The title piece that concludes this album reaches a touching, poetic catharsis."
